Abstract

The treehopper Guayaquila gracilicornis (Stål) (Hemiptera: Membracidae) is a phytophagous species associated with the cashew tree in Panama, where this treehopper has mutualistic relationships with ants such as Camponotus lindigi Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The objective of the study was to determine the population fluctuation of nymphs and adults of G. gracilicornis associated with the ant species C. lindigi as well as the correlation with rainfall in cashew trees. The research was conducted in a cashew plantation in the town of Río Hato, Panama, over the course of a year, considering the area's dry and rainy seasons. Monthly samplings were carried out from July 2021 to June 2022. The population fluctuation of adults and nymphs of G. gracilicornis as well as of the ant C. lindigi presented a population peak in June 2022, corresponding to the highest population density recorded in the rainy period. There is no relationship between the populations of the treehopper and the precipitation during the study. There is a high correlation between the presence of adult specimens and nymphs of G. gracilicornis and the ant species C. lindigi due to a mutualistic relationship between both species. The present study demonstrates that the cashew is a host plant of a treehopper species and its main associated ant, which permits determining ecological relationships for management programs of this treehopper in future scenarios where it could potentially constitute a primary pest within cashew plantations in Panama.
