WATER EROSION AND USE OF LIVING BARRIERS IN PINEAPPLE FIELDS

In order to evaluate the soil loss by water erosion in a pineapple crop, using live barriers as soil conservation practices, an experiment was conducted between July 2016 and December of 2017 in the community of Las Yayas, district of La Chorrera; province of Panama Oeste. The study included four treatments with four repetitions: pineapple with lemon grass, pineapple with vetiver, pineapple with conventional sowing and a bare soil. Experimental plots were installed under a complete random design, with average slope of 10%; 11 m long and 1,8 m wide. Runoff and sediment collectors were installed in the lower part of the plot to estimate soil loss. In relation to soil loss, the analysis of variance showed differences (P<0,01) among treatments. The highest erosion rate fluctuated between 420 Mg.ha-1 in bare soil and 75,1 Mg.ha-1 under conventional sowing, exceeding the tolerance threshold for soil loss established in 11 Mg.ha-1. In plots with live barriers of lemon grass and vetiver, the impact of water erosion was lowest with 6,2 Mg.ha-1 and 8,8 Mg.ha-1, respectively. The values of water erosion generated by land preparation practices and pineapple crop management demonstrate the need to implement the use of living barriers, as an effective alternative for soil and water conservation.
