Abstract

The causal agents of rice foliar bacterial diseases in Panama were identified based on symptomalogical and morfological characteristics of the bacterium and its colonies; biochemical reaction and inmunoenzimatic test (ELISA). The rice foliar bacterial caused a variety of damage and symptoms which were confused with thus caused by nitrogen deficiency and fungi. The samples were collected in the provinces of Chiriqui, Veraguas, Herrera, Los Santos, Cocle and Panama. The foliar rice bacterial diseases are caused by a complex of four species of the genus Pseudomonas and two species of the genus Xanthomonas. The incidence of isolates belonging to the genus Xanthomonas were higher than the isolates of Pseudomonas; and both are present througth the rice producing areas of the country.
