PRODUCTIVITY OF A YUCA MANUAL HARVESTING METHOD WITH AN EXTRACTING DEVICE
Keywords:
Manual harvesting, harvesting efficiency, hand labour.Abstract
The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a manual extracting device to harvest yucca. The research was realized at El Ejido Experimental Station, in Los Santos. A completely randomized statistical design was applied on a 500 m2 plot having a planting density of 10,000 plants per hectare. Two treatments were established: manual harvest with the extracting device and manual harvest without the extracting device. Harvesting time of yucca plants was registered as well as the quantity and weight of commercial and non commercial roots extracted. Statistical analysis consisted of t-Tests for the comparison of means. The relation between root weight in kilograms (in function of the harvesting methodology as dummy variable) and time in minutes used for harvesting were analized using an econometric log-linear model. The results indicate that the number of harvested plants per minute was superior for manual harvest with the extracting device, an average of one plant/minute, more than with manual harvest without the device. The model predicted that, with the extracting device, harvested weight would be 123% greater than that of manual harvest without the device, as an average. It is concluded that harvest method with the extracting device showed a superior productivity. Due to agricultural hand labour scarcity, a greater efficiency in time of harvesting would reduce its usage.
