Abstract

Caloric body condition of Wagyu-Brahman crosses was studied in a tropical rain forest climate, Gualaca. Birth months were grouped in two seasons (EP): dry (ESC) and rainy (ELL). Genetic groups (GR) of sired (GRP) were: Wagyu (WG) and Brahman (BRH); the GR of the dams (GRM) were: WG25, WG50, WGF1 y CRUCE; GR of progenies (GRANI) were: WG25, WG50, WG75 and WGF1. Dependent variables were: body temperatures (TMPC): loin (TL), head (TC), ribs (TCS), abdomen (TV), and forehead (TF); skin thickness (GP); heat state (ECC), body heat capacity (CCC), body heat overloading (SCP) and body heat pressure (PCC), and heat tolerance indicators (ITC): Iberia heat tolerance test (PITC), Gaalaas heat tolerance test (PTCG) and Benezra adaptability coefficient (CAB). It was utilized a mixed model where year (YR) and EP(YR) were random effects and GRP and GRM(GRP) were fixed effects. It was applied an origin regression analysis between ITH (Temperature-Humidity Index) and TMPC. Average effect GRP and GRM(GRP) were (P>0,05) for TMPC, ECC and ITC. TL (38,8±0,6°C), TC (37,4±0,6°C), TF (36,2±0,5°C) and TV (35,5±0,5°C) were greater when GRP was WG and GRM was WGF1. Relationships between ITH and TMPC for GRANI were linear (P<0,05). High CCC (204,9 kcal/°C) was found with GRP, BRH and GRM, WGF1, but higher SCC (403,6 kcal) and PCC (5,76 kcal/kg0,75) with GRM, WG50. PITC (79,5) and PTCG (71,4) were greater with GRP, WG and GRM, WGF1, but smaller CAB with GRP, BRH and GRM, WG50 (3,11). TMPC, ECC and ITC varied according to the GRP and GRM, and the relationships between ITH and TMPC were linear form the origin. It was concluded that all GR were heat stressed.
